Deni Avdija Shines Despite Israel’s Early Exit

Although Israel’s EuroBasket 2025 campaign ended earlier than hoped, Deni Avdija emerged as one of the standout players of the tournament. The Washington Wizards forward was named to the EuroBasket All-Star Second Team, after averaging 24 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2 steals per game over six outings.

Israel finished the group stage with a respectable 3–3 record, highlighted by a stunning upset win over France. Avdija was central to that victory, dropping 31 points and shutting down multiple French possessions in the fourth quarter. His combination of size, playmaking, and defensive versatility gave Israel a fighting chance in every game.

However, the Round of 16 proved too much, as Greece’s physicality and Giannis Antetokounmpo’s dominance ended Israel’s hopes with a 95–78 defeat. Despite the loss, Avdija was relentless, recording 26 points and 9 rebounds. His resilience won admiration from both fans and coaches across the tournament.

For Israel, the result is bittersweet. The team has shown signs of progress in recent years, but still lacks the depth needed to consistently compete against Europe’s elite. Head coach Ariel Beit-Halachmi admitted that while Avdija has been a revelation, the supporting cast needs to improve: “Deni is a leader, but basketball is a team game. We must build around him with patience and commitment.”

Avdija’s EuroBasket 2025 performance is likely to raise his stock in the NBA as well. Entering his fifth professional season, he is showing confidence in his offensive game to match his well-established defensive reputation. For Israel, he represents not only the present but also the future of the national program.
